For Watson Maack, the last year of his life has been filled with nothing but change. Making the move from small town Reading, PA to Nashville, TN to attend Belmont University felt like anything but a leap of faith - it felt absolutely, unquestionably, necessary.

After several years of playing in a band and managing the ups and downs of collaboration, negotiation, and uncertain next steps, 2018 saw the end of his Christian rock group Boundaries and the start of a newer, freer version of the solo artist Maack had always strived to be. He credits this newfound sense of invigoration to the necessary need to let go of things that are heavy. The beginning of his first semester at Belmont felt weighed down by the distance between himself and home, and the familiarity of the creative network he’d built for himself there.

“Right One” takes all of that displacement and channels it into 2019, and the belief that he is where he is for a reason. Thematically, this first look at Maack’s promised end of year EP takes us through his perception on how fate plays with hard work. Every move in reinventing himself has been carefully planned, because you never know when the right person might be watching.

As of now, Maack is currently unsigned and has no foreseeable plans to change that. After leaving a years-long band, it feels completely right to be in total control and not tied to any other person. All creative decisions are, for once, his own, and that’s the most refreshing thing that has come from all of this.

“Right One” was mixed by Jason Wozniak and mastered by The Foxboro Mastering Studio. It’s an enigmatic, atmospheric track with layered acoustic guitars and emphatic drums. It’s a step up and in the right direction in regards to Maack’s maturing solo sound. It’s a transitional song in a number of ways - conceptually, lyrically, and productionally.

Maack is playing a release show on April 19th at West Reading’s Hitching Post, and an RSVP via EventBrite is required to attend.

“Right One” is available across streaming platforms.
