Philly-based indie pop group Median have just dropped a dreamy music video for their latest single “Time Alone.” Since their formation in 2017, Median’s sound has progressively matured from a place of suburban rock to encapsulating an enigmatic, alternative soundscape. Since working with sound engineer Tyler Ripley of Free Dive Records (known best for his work with Dry Reef), there has been a palpable amount of growth within the band’s creative and technical work. Their sound has been compared to those of Turnover and The Story So Far, and their 2017 debut EP Dream Week was featured on WXPN’s The Key.

“Time Alone” is the culmination of a collaborative effort between bandmates with backgrounds all across the board. The song itself listens like a push and pull between wanting to escape within another person and needing to take time to be alone with yourself, all while existing within a sort of visual dream space through the cinematography.

The visuals juxtapose the lyrics so nicely, with an altered sense of reality that is so telltale of how it feels to be caught between being asleep and awake. The camerawork is beautiful, with several continuous panning shots that take up an entire scene that add to that feeling of uncertainty. The lack of cuts puts you in the moment and breaks the barrier between “viewing” and “experiencing.” The underlying guitar riff that is nearly ever-present through the song comes through filtered and pairs nicely with the pacing of the video.

If both the “Time Alone” single and video are any indication of what their debut LP will look like, then I’m excited. Having various musical backgrounds will lend itself to a really interesting blending of styles and tracks and I’m confident that Median will succeed with this impending release.
