Re: Internships are scary but totally worth it

I'm about two weeks away from starting my spring semester, and my work at WXPN ended early in December. So, I've had plenty of time to think and recap my experience. Even though unfortunately I have to put round two of the internship on hold until the summer, the skills that I learned in the fall were more than invaluable.

If you don't know by now, I worked under John Vettese, chief editor of The Key, and my job description required covering album releases, recapping shows, transcribing interviews, and announcing tours. I was exposed to bands of all genres, of all rankings, but what made it so cool was that every piece I wrote related exclusively to Philadelphia. I learned about the existence of countless DIY bands, explored tons of new venues, branched out to other Philly basements, and got to listen to new music for two hours each morning. If that isn't the ideal job, I don't know what is. Sure, the first few weeks were intimidating - working in a real news room at a real radio station was overwhelming, but once I settled into my back corner desk, I felt like I truly did have a place there.

While I couldn't make work fit into my schedule for this semester, that doesn't mean all is lost. I've got my foot in the door, I've met some really cool people, and I've cultivated some incredibly important skills to help grow my own blog and improve my writing and PR skills. For that, I am intensely grateful. Internships are meant to be the start of something, and I truly believe my time at WXPN was the start of my next big step.
