Caracara is a cathartic indie rock band from Philly, and have gained upward success due to their self-described “distorted emotional” sound. They recently released their Better EP via Memory Music with producer Will Yip in Conshohocken.

Tierra Whack - Whack World (2018)

Carlos Pacheco-Perez (rhodes, keys)

The first time we watched Tierra Whack’s music video for Whack World was in our studio on our projector, which is just a baller sentence to say, but in all honesty we were completely changed after the first viewing. It’s very rare to a have an album contain incredible instrumentals, rapping, hooks, and visuals all in one package. The world that she created was so colorful and deep, every detail meticulously attended to. We watched/listened to the record probably two or three more times that evening and became missionaries of the Tierra Whack gospel from that day forward.

M83- Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (2011)

Will Lindsay (vocals, guitar)

The scope of this record is outrageous. The narrative arc takes you on such a journey, you become engulfed in the world that these songs create. I love how M83 seamlessly hops between genres, constantly referencing past eras without ever sounding dated. I believe I read somewhere that Anthony Gonzales makes M83 records at his home studio while taking breaks to watch 80’s movies and skate on a halfpipe he built in his garage, which is my dream more or less.

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. (2017)

Sean Gill (drums, percussion)

Cohesiveness and scope are getting harder to come by, but the art is not lost on Kendrick Lamar. Few albums have so much to say, so many layers of expression and meaning, and such a good aesthetic. This album just seemed like perfect synthesis of the production, creativity, lyricism, and even visual element that Kendrick had been building through his previous albums. It still carries as a masterpiece by a master of the craft.

Deafheaven - Sunbather (2013)

George Legatos (bass)

This record blew my mind when it came out. I just hadn’t heard anything like it before. It was on heavy rotation during the summer of 2013 and I still largely attribute that time of my life with it. What I admire most about this band and particularly this album is how it breaks every mold imaginable. Even the artwork defies your expectations. I think Deafheaven are one of the most unique bands of our time and Sunbather is a testament to pushing the boundaries and crafting your own sound.

Lady Gaga - ARTPOP (2013)

Ashley Gellman (photo, visuals)

For me, a top album of the decade is one that sticks with you long term and can always go back to. From the cover to the contents, Gaga showcases the art the world can bring. We hear Gaga at her most vulnerable and watch her grow above and beyond afterwards. She has been a force that inspires me constantly and will continue to for another decade.
