Total Rubbish's "Honey Ryder" Video Feels Like the Fuzzed-Out Bar Show We've All Been Craving

Total Rubbish, a three-piece grunge rock band from Philly has had a relatively packed summer. After announcing their signing to Born Losers Records, they dropped a single and video for the first taste of their forthcoming EP, Triple Negative. The track, “Honey Ryder,” is everything I feel like we’ve been missing about live shows. For the first time in a minute, I’m not sitting here reviewing a track about quarantine, and I can’t tell you how good that feels.

With a heavy focus on oscillating guitar riffs and fuzzy, monotonous vocal lines, “Honey Ryder” is a fresh take on Philly’s usual grunge sound. There’s no angst in the lyrics — if anything, the song listens like a challenge. The video is a series of rough cuts and live takes from an actual venue on an actual stage. The band is washed in red and pink lights, which feels ominous and alluring paired with the synchronicity of the vocalists. There’s no overproduction in the audio or the visuals. Total Rubbish seems to be going for the “take me as I am” approach, and I like what they have to offer so far.

Triple Negative is due out this fall, and you can watch the video for “Honey Ryder” below.
