The latest single from Party Muscles, aptly titled “Citywalking,” hit streaming services yesterday along with a kaleidoscopic music video etched on grainy black and white film. My friends at Cherry-Veen Zine expertly premiered the whole drop, and you can read what they wrote here.

The track itself is driven by a sliding scale guitar riff, singer Colin McCarry’s tight and monotoned vocal style, and dynamic drum hits. “Citywalking” is the first taste of Party Muscles’ pending LP, and they’ve self-described its sound and production process as something completely different from 2019’s Does It Even Matter. Taken from life’s messiest moments and turned into something beautiful, “Citywalking” is a compilation of the mixed emotions that follow a breakup, the push to move on and the pull to step back. The band plans to release one single with an accompanying video every other month until the EP hits streaming services in August 2020.

The music video plays nicely with the thematic elements of the lyrics. There are moments of rockstar-sincerity found in the city walking scenes (purposeful use of the title, of course), and moments of lightheartedness and humor found in the individual band member’s profile shots. Catching bands just being themselves is one of the most successful cinematic tools a music video can employ, and Party Muscles nailed it with this one. If you’ve seen them play live, you know these guys are full of personality, and a song with even a hint of severity behind the meaning is easily counteracted by their onstage (or on-camera) personas.

I’m excited for the rest of these sneaky releases if they’re anything like “Citywalking” and its light to dark to light sound and footage. I’m tempted to ask them to drop it all now since we all know we’ll need the content binge over these next couple weeks. There’s a looming level of maturation within this song and the songs from Does It Even Matter, and that’s always an exciting change to dissect as a listener.

You can watch Party Muscles’ video for “Citywalking” below, and stream the track (over and over and over, times are tough!) here.
