Earth Radio, an eclectic folk-funk foursome, have released the debut single off their forthcoming EP, Orbiter, and “Lay Your Love” is certainly indicative of genre-blending and rule breaking. With vocal trills reminiscent of Dolores O’Riordan’s signature tone, slapping bass lines, and an Americana-inspired soundscape, Earth Radio seemingly comes out of nowhere with this infusion of soul folk and executes it perfectly.

Mixed and mastered by Tyler Ripley at Rittenhouse Soundworks, the production of this song effectively allows each individual band members’ unique personalities to shine through the recording. Dueling vocalists Jani Duerr and Joanna Osborne each have a strong sense of self as they gently push and pull each other through the verses. She takes the high end, with effortless harmonies that float over the low end yet never overpower the melody. It’s in the in-between moments, the experimental riffing, where each singer shines, though.

With a jazz-inspired rhythm section thanks to drummer Dan Lord and bassist Jay Jolly, “Lay Your Love” checks every box as far as dance-inspired musicality is concerned. It’s a surprisingly pleasing blend of sounds that, on paper, might seem like they don’t fit together, but are flawless in their execution. Add this one to your summer playlists because we could all definitely use something upbeat lately.
