Honeyjar, a relatively new indie rock project, is set to release their second single tomorrow, and it listens like a bright light in the middle of all this uncertainty. Releasing music is hard right now, and people seem to be flooded with new content to listen to because artists want to push up LPs and EPs to serve as a beacon of hope as well as a positive distraction. “Don’t Fall Out Of Love” should absolutely find a way onto your playlists. While a lot of music I’ve been reviewing has been relatively topical to the times - i.e., isolation, cabin fever, anxiety - this single is bright and nostalgic and sweet. It’s the perfect reprieve in every sense of the word.

My first thought when I gave the track an initial listen was that the soundscape is totally relative to all the best parts of classic indie group States, which is absolutely a compliment. Mindy White’s vocals are killer and Honeyjar gives off the same vibe. It’s easily digestible with a slow-building foundation of glimmering guitars and chorusing vocals. Lead singer Kayla Rae has this clear and incredible range that’s backed by subtle echos. The song builds in intensity and sonically transitions away from the pseudo-country feel into something a little bit reminiscent of 90s glam rock. This song is a decade-spanning, genre-bending track and I love it.

“Don’t Fall Out Of Love” is one of those perfectly simplistic, says-everything-it-needs-to-say tracks. The title begs the question that the song asks, and the listener can just fall into a content space. I’m excited for future Honeyjar releases - this vibe is exactly what I think we need right now. You’re going to think about your ex but you’re also going to want to dance when you listen to this.
