Pixie Queen Comes Home

I don't have a reason to stay, I just need you

Anthony Green has a habit of ending all of his solo tours at home in Philadelphia, and, oh, there’s nothing like a homecoming. A Doylestown native, Green ended his Pixie Queen tour at Union Transfer, a favorite among the city’s small concert venues.

Pixie Queen is Green’s fourth solo album, and the Circa Survive frontman has truly outdone himself this time. Most of his albums are about the people he loves, the places he’s been, or the hardships he’s been through. This record, however, completely tells the sweet love story between him and his wife, Meredith. They’ve been together for almost fifteen years, and Green’s lyrics portray the honesty of love and the reality that it isn’t always perfect.

This is a bitter-sweet album, as love usually is. The happy tracks, such as “A Reason to Stay” and “Better Half” are filled with affection and nostalgia of the early days of their relationship.

“East Coast Winters” and “I’m Sorry For Everything I’ve Ever Done” are slow ballads that deal with the low points, the times when Green’s struggles with addiction almost became too much for the pair to handle.

“Will It Be” is a song for their three children, and the lyrics talk of Green’s own childhood, growing up as the significantly youngest of three brothers and how he has learned how to be a parent in his own way.

The closing track, “Pixie Queen,” is a perfect, powerful end to the record. It’s a strong, hopeful song that makes me feel like the Anthony and Meredith can conquer anything together. It gives me hope for my own relationship.

I love seeing Green’s solo tours because his backing band is always members of Good Old War, another Philadelphia band and Green’s best friends. One of my favorite things about him is, he’s a generous guy. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him before, so I reached out and asked if he could get us a photo pass for the show because I happen to be dating a pretty great photographer. He said he’d hook us up, and we were pumped.

Green has this undeniable energy while he’s on stage. He has an incredible stage presence that gets the whole crowd  grooving. He’s a sincere performer, his passion for the words he’s singing is so evident on his face and in the way he makes the rest of us feel. This was one of the most fun shows I’ve seen in a long time, and at the end of the night, Green thanked us for coming with a promise to be back and a conspiratorial grin: “See you for Circa Survive, 2017.”
