Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, indie rock trio The Goon Sax trekked halfway around the world to kick off their US tour at our very own Johnny Brenda’s. Fresh off the release of their second LP, We’re Not Talking via Chapter Music, The Goon Sax brought their crowd-pleaser hit “Make Time 4 Love” to their Philly fans, and they did not disappoint.

Their recognizable bass-loaded sound and heavy conversational lyrics, paired with magnetic accents and three-part harmonies made for a show reminiscent of a garage-rock band performance.

I always love watching bands from other countries, and it’s not often that an Australian group rolls through our own DIY scene. The Goon Sax brought such a high energy to the stage, but still managed to look incredibly cool and all-business during their songs.

Notable tracks from the night included “She Knows,” “Strange Light,” and “Losing Myself.” Even if you were unfamiliar with their music, their melodies were infectious and the new album is definitely a fan-favorite. And the intimate venue that they chose to start their US tour is one of my personal favorites in Philadelphia.

You can stream We’re Not Talking everywhere now, and their next show is scheduled for tonight in Washington D.C. at Songbyrd Music House and Record Cafe.
